Understanding COGS in MerchantSpring

COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) represents the actual cost of the products you sell—whether it’s manufacturing, wholesale purchase, or direct sourcing costs. In MerchantSpring, you can upload your own COGS data via a simple CSV file to power accurate profit calculations across your dashboards.

What does the feature do?

Uploading Custom COGS enables MerchantSpring to calculate true net profit, rather than simply tracking revenue. This one-time (or recurring) upload populates your cost data across key reports, so you're no longer relying on assumptions or averages.

Once uploaded, COGS data is applied automatically to:

  • Channel-Level Profitability

  • Product Profit

  • Top Sellers / Worst Sellers

  • Sales vs Target (including net profit)

Why is this important?

Without your product cost data, MerchantSpring can’t tell you how much you’re actually earning—it can only show sales. COGS is what turns the platform from a sales tracker into a full profit and performance engine.

Adding your COGS allows you to:

  • See real profitability by product and by channel

  • Spot low-margin SKUs that may not be worth pushing

  • Compare sales volume vs. profit for smarter decision-making

  • Enable financially accurate forecasting and target setting

When should I use this?

  • Immediately after onboarding (to unlock full value of reports)

  • Before monthly reviews or forecasting

  • During product or category performance audits

  • When assessing advertising ROI on a product level

Even a one-time upload of COGS data can drastically improve dashboard insights.
