Why do out-of-stock variations sometimes trigger Image Change Alerts?

In some cases, when a specific variation goes out of stock, Amazon may automatically display the next available variation’s images on the detail page.

If this occurs, MerchantSpring may detect this as an image update for the out-of-stock variation, since the catalog view has effectively changed.
